Frequently Asked Questions

What is your philosophy in preparing transcriptions?

The first aim is to preserve the original character of the piece. As much as possible the contours of the melody are left unaltered. Harmonic choices are guided by standard voice leading and what is appropriate for the violin.

The second aim is to make the piece enjoyable to play for the violinist. A transcription might be extremely challenging but should still allow the performer space to add unique touches in presenting a personal interpretation of the original.

What is your philosophy on composing?

Composing is about developing your own musical language and using it to create works that reveal a little bit of one’s own soul. Using that language and telling a story with the tools of melody, rhythm and harmony is the goal. A simple title might introduce the mood but the notes and performance convey the plot.

The classical music that we still listen to today is both unique and timeless. Those two qualities gave it relevance many years ago when it was created and give it life today. My ambition is to create music that enjoins those twin opposing forces; something that is worth playing not just as a premiere but in many performances by future generations.
